In “Changing the Perception of Transgender Identities Through Visual Media”, I sought to expand upon my research project from spring of 2025, “Does Prejudice Affect the Understanding of Transgender Youth?” I conducted data analysis to find which particular demographics displayed the largest gaps in understanding regarding transgender and cisgender adolescent gender development. I found that higher religiosity (i.e. stronger religious beliefs), older age, and right-leaning political beliefs all had statistically significant correlations with higher transgender prejudice (calculated using the Transgender Attitude and Beliefs Scale), which has a statistically significant correlation with larger gaps in understanding. Using these findings, I ideated upon how to create products to address these lapses. An operating principle of my research is the premise that minds can be changed — and the evidence supports that. In my literature review, I found research to support that people’s opinions about the transgender community can be changed in 2 minutes or less. Appeals to emotion and in-person connection could also spur greater understanding, regardless of whether or not the individuals delivering information belonged to the transgender community. I decided that within the scope of my project and its timeline, my best path forward would be to create brochures with easily digestible information about the transgender community in the hopes of reducing transgender prejudice. I wrote and designed a brochure aimed towards parents supporting their children during prepubescent transition, and I created a brochure & accompanying PDF providing resources for transgender and gender non-conforming students on my university campus.
